Religion Pragraph Apartheid was a policy of economic, political, and segregational discrimination racial laws that were formally practiced by the government of the Republic of South Africa. However, since then. things have changed. Most of the change was due to Steve Biko and his followers. Steve Biko was a member of the Bantu tribe. Because his was a not-white, he had to follow by the rules of all blacks. The rules were: curfue was 6:00 P.M., no voting, they could only hold certain jobs, etc. In spite of this, Biko would stay out late or travel out of his limits to preach. The government of South Africa came to know of his works and was oppesed to them. His ways and struggles are all shown through the non-fiction movie Cry Freedom: The True Story that Shook South Africa and Awakened the World. Here, he meets a white journalist who is, at first, oppesed to Steve's worries because he writes about them in his column. But, after agreeing to see the conditions that non-European groups live in, he changes the topic of the stories. Donald Woods, or Kelvin Kline, is shoked at what he discovers and realizes that it isn't right. He starts to follow Denzel Washington around. Eventually, someone finds out about Steve Biko's whereabouts. He is banned which means he has even more strict of rules. But this doesn't stop him from trying all that he can. Again, he is found breaking the constitution. This time, a black turns him in and he is forced to live in poor conditions in a prison where he is constantly beaten while awaiting trial. At trial, Washington speaks the same words that Biko did in real life--the truth. While on the way to see a jail doctor becasue of his sevre injuries, Steve Biko dies in the back of a truck. However, Donald Woods contines his effort. Becuase of his past contacts with Biko, Woods was banned, too. So, he snuck out to publish a book that he wrote on the apartheid in the Rebuplic of South Africa. In all, so many people died of this discriminating way of government. However, one man influenced another a man and together, they changed the world forever. |
